'Naked scanners' may increase air security tax

Canadian airline passengers will soon be emptying their wallets along with their pockets for airport security to help pay for the privilege of being subjected to virtual strip searches.

Industry sources say the federal government is planning to hike the airport security tax that has been charged on every plane ticket since the aftermath of 9/11.

The tax increase would supposedly be used to offset the costs of new airport security measures such as the installation of “naked scanners” that can see through passengers’ clothes.

Under pressure from the airline industry, successive governments have repeatedly cut the much-hated air security tax from $24 per round trip in 2003 to $9.80 today.

Discount airlines have made a particularly compelling case that a fixed-amount tax such as the security charge has a far greater impact on a relatively cheap ticket than on a full fare.

Airline passengers have been equally vociferous in their condemnation of the growing plethora of taxes and other levies that routinely turn advertised bargain flights into budget-sucking trips to the bank.
