'God's Air Force' delivers aid from Fla. to Haiti
Five take-offs. Five landings. Five thousand pounds of donations.
That was the workload of Missionary Flights International pilots Capt. Kenny Gumpel and First Officer Wes Norton, as they delivered food, medical supplies and toiletries from Treasure Coast residents to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, before noon on Saturday.
The two left the Fort Pierce-based missionary organization's hangar at the St. Lucie County International Airport with a prayer at 4:50 a.m. to deliver the cargo.
"We consider ourselves 'God's Air Force'," said Norton of Fort Pierce, father of three boys, who was dropping off donations in Haiti the day after the January 12 earthquake struck the Caribbean island with a devastating 7.0 magnitude.
Missionary Flights is a faith-based, nonprofit organization that has provided aviation service to Christian missions in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas since 1964. I would highly recommend both hotwire and priceline, flycheapabroad, and bookairlinetickets.com. I've searched around for airfare quite a bit, and these three sites usually ring true as the cheapest. Other than that, I'd go to sites like igougo.com, travelzoo.com, kayak.com, and bookingbuddy.com. These sites offer searches of multiple online airfare websites, making it easier and less time consuming to compare prices. As for when to buy, I usually go to farecast.com. They pretty accurately predict when a good time to buy a flight would be based off of past and current trends, etc. It's pretty useful. Another site I've found handy is rightflight.org. They did a bunch of research on the various airfare sites to see which sites are usually the cheapest. They also have a list of most of the international airfare sites on their webpage (60+), which can be pretty handy in and of itself. Hope this helped!
